Chatham University is known by many for its eclectic history and the many eerie urban legends that surround it. While many students know about the hauntings around campus, or even the abandoned buildings, there are a few other places you may not know about.
If you’re looking to shake up your usual Chatham routine, set out on a scavenger hunt to find these five spots across campus.
1. Campbell creepy-crawlies
Have you ever wandered downstairs in the Campbell Memorial Chapel and seen something you weren’t expecting? There are two classrooms in the basement of the Chapel with skeleton and spiderweb decor, creating an atmosphere that may seem out-of-place beneath the Chapel’s quiet halls.
2. A fascinating fitness find
The Athletic and Fittness Center has many amenities for students, but the basement holds one that may be overlooked. On the lowest floor, just past the squash courts, there’s a five-foot gap in the wall that is home to the Center’s rock-climbing wall.
3. Corridors get cryptic
Another perhaps unknown location lies beneath the Mellon Center and Anderson Dining Hall. There is a series of hallways and doors leading to even more hallways, and if you wander far enough, you may come across a small room with no clear purpose, except for a quiet zen garden, occasionally with ominous notes written in the sand.
4./5. An empty greenhouse and a heart-broken bench
If you have any classes in the buildings behind Falk Hall, you may have seen the abandoned greenhouse. A campus urban legend lurks behind this greenhouse holding lots of history. It is known to many students as a “heartbreak bench” because couples who sit there almost always end up breaking up.
