On November 2, the Women’s Soccer team finished their season with a loss against the Thomas More College Saints, in the first game of the playoffs. The Saints came into the game 9-0 in conference play and 20-0-1 in the season, and first in the conference. The Cougars entered the contest 6-3 in conference play, an overall record of 11-5-2 and fourth in the conference.
The Cougars came out strong, but the Saints battled back and scored after the first 15 minutes of the game. They went on to score two more goals within five minutes to increase their lead to 3-0. The Cougars defense held the high-powered Saints offense to only seven shots on goal, but three of them were converted into goals.
Chatham started the second half aggressively, and carried this play throughout the rest of the game. The Saints only scored one goal in the second half to make the score 4-0, but the Cougars were unable to respond.
“My teammates have developed a winning mentality over this soccer season, which shows in our record,” said junior forward/midfielder and Biology major Megan Sieg. The team’s mentality reflected their play on the field as they finished top five in their conference for the season. “We have learned to close out and finish games so the result is in our favor,” Sieg went on to say. The upperclassmen have instilled a winning attitude that the young Cougars can carry over into next year and the seasons to come.
This season has been a memorable one for the Cougars. They made the playoffs for the first time in the team’s history. “I know the team and I am very proud of our accomplishments, and we look forward to going even further in the future years,” said sophomore defensive midfielder and Biology major Katie Sieg. “The team this year was more experienced and more talented, which made a huge difference from last year to this year,” said Sieg. With the experience and leadership of the upperclassmen, the team has the potential to excel in the PAC for years to come.
