As Valentine’s Day has been approaching up until today, I’ve found myself questioning what it really means to celebrate love in a world that, especially as of late, is filled with so much chaos and uncertainty. The bright reds and pinks filling store displays have now begun to reinforce negative ideas about the holiday that have long circulated in society, but now feel more real than ever.
However, against all odds, the true essence of the holiday persists. As a departure from how I typically celebrate Valentine’s Day, I’ve decided to go about it in a more unconventional way this year. For anyone in a similar state of mind, here are some meaningful ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day solo, honoring arguably the most important relationship you’ll ever have: the one with yourself.

Try something new
The joy that stems from learning for yourself is truly a rewarding feeling. Take this day as an opportunity to try something you’ve been meaning to do but haven’t gotten around to yet. Whether it’s knitting, painting, cooking or something else, whatever sparks your interest is a perfect way to enjoy some time alone.
Take up journaling
Journaling can be the most satisfactory way to gain a deeper understanding of yourself. It’s a simple one, but journaling can be a great help in processing emotions, clarifying thoughts and reflecting on personal growth.
Unplug for the day
It’s a concept that is constantly reiterated: being online, especially by using social media, is a major contributor to feelings of anxiety and depression. Even limiting screen time can boost one’s mood, create more opportunities for hobbies and self-care and offer several other benefits for mental well-being.
Treat yourself
Treating yourself doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. This could mean taking a walk, baking or purchasing your favorite dessert, having a movie marathon or even indulging in a good book.
Have a day of rest and relaxation
In such a fast-paced world, it’s easy for anyone (especially college students) to tend to prioritize productivity over personal well-being. As a result, essential aspects of self-care, like sleep, often take a back seat to other responsibilities. However, beyond getting enough rest, simple activities such as taking a bath or shower, setting a relaxing mood with calming music and enjoying a cup of tea can help create a peaceful and restorative day.
