Oct. 31 is upon us, and some of us may still be searching for the perfect costume. Whether you have procrastinated or simply enjoy the thrill of a last-minute challenge, there are plenty of options to show your campus and Halloween spirit.

  1. Carson the Cougar

DIY cougar ears can easily be crafted with a headband and brown construction paper if fabric or felt is not available. Chatham University apparel is also a key factor in making this costume true to Carson’s school spirit. Using eyeliner or face paint, draw whiskers and a nose for the final touch.

  1. Pennsy the Seal

A costume of Chatham’s beloved previous mascot can be achieved with a gray top and pants or a skirt. Draw on white or black whiskers and add a Chatham shirt if desired. Pennsy’s song says that she “bounced a ball of white,” so as a bonus, try juggling a white ball to achieve this look. Finally, Pennsy’s standout feature is undoubtedly her long eyelashes. Accentuating your eyelashes with mascara or even false eyelashes will make yours an authentic Pennsy costume.

  1. Howard the duck

Howard was a beloved mallard who spent his days at the Mellon Center pond. Despite the loss of our feathered friend in 2020, his legacy lives on. A perfect way to honor the Chatham icon is with a Halloween costume. A green and yellow baseball hat, perhaps with some googly eyes, can serve as his bill, while a brown sherpa shirt can emulate his feathered body.

  1. One of Chatham’s ghosts

This costume can be more intricate depending on your preference. A classic white sheet ghost and a “hello, my name is…” sticker with the name of the chosen campus ghost will suffice, but you can add more accessories to really define which ghost you are portraying. The Blue Lady of Woodland Hall, for example, can be achieved with a blue dress and some ghostly makeup.

  1. Chatham student-athlete

This is an accessible option for those whose jerseys, warm-up sweats and equipment have taken over their wardrobe already, but athletic apparel is also available for purchase at the University Bookstore. Want an unexpected twist? Pair typical athletic apparel with an undead makeup look and a craving for brains.
