After 36 years of waiting, audiences across the nation filed into theaters to catch a glimpse of the long-awaited return of Beetlejuice. On opening weekend alone, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” brought in over 110 million dollars. Altogether “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has grossed over $160 million out of the box office these past two weeks.
Another debut from Michael Keaton, and fans were delighted – a yinzer on the big screen yet again to reprise one of his original roles! Alongside him, Winona Ryder starred once again as Lydia Deetz. Returning from the original “Beetlejuice” was Catherine O’Hara’s character Delia Deetz. New kid on the block, Jenna Ortega starred as Astrid Deetz, the daughter of Lydia Deetz. Additionally, Danny Devito made a short cameo appearance in the beginning of the film.
I finally had the chance to view the long-awaited “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” I must say that I wish that it had been a bit longer of a film. However, I do feel that the music during the opening credits was quite engrossing and definitely captured the audience’s attention! Moreover, I enjoyed how in this film Beetlejuice had sidekicks who helped him out by taking phone calls in the afterlife call center under his supervision.
In all, I did find the plot of the sequel to have lots of unexpected changes for each of the characters. In that sense, I would then consider this film to be authentic and enthralling in its own way. Alternately I am under the opinion that Warner Brothers would have benefited from a release closer to Halloween. Especially if one of the most prominent scenes of the movie happened during midnight on Halloween night, and that being said, who could’ve counted on such a twist? The casting had been assigned accordingly and I also found “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” to be a slightly silly film, but entertaining and worth the watch.
On another note, I’m a bit surprised that a sequel to the original was actually released. Especially since the initial “Beetlejuice” made its debut in cinemas well over thirty years ago.
I’m left utterly confused as well as intrigued about what might happen next after the final scene of the film. Some might have thought of the last performance as rather gruesome, and I wouldn’t disagree with them. Despite that opinion, I would argue that “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” ended on an interesting cliffhanger. My hopes are that there will be a third film to complete the series as well as elaborate and highlight why “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” concluded in such a Burtonesque manner.
